The Importance of Data in Manufacturing

In one way or another, we’re all bound by some type of data. Whether it’s the Internet-based data you can use on smart gadgets or the kind that measures and tracks important information, the concept of ‘data’ is now an intrinsic part of our lives. And no one knows this better than manufacturers.

Today, manufacturers use both types of data to produce quality goods. Not only do they use informational data to make thoughtful business decisions, but they also use the Internet kind of data to streamline their processes.

Here’s how collecting or using even just a little bit of data makes a huge impact on manufacturing:

  • Connectivity. The ability to connect is integral to modern manufacturing. It bridges the gap between machines and allows humans to interact with those machines even from a distance. To do this, manufacturers rely on Internet-based data and cloud computing to track manufacturing data and progress. The data collected from these endeavors, in turn, enables manufacturers to reach important conclusions about their businesses.
  • Better Insights. When manufacturers collect data, they have easier access to information about how their shop is running and where improvements need to be made. Data-driven manufacturing allows management to 1) observe trends in production and labor time, 2) correct maintenance and quality issues, and 3) minimize safety and business risks throughout the operation.
  • Resource Control. In manufacturing, material and human resources are the mainstays of the business. So, it makes sense to make every effort to retain as many of those resources as possible. To do this, manufacturers utilize data-driven processes to understand how to make better use of employee skills and time as well as make improvements to avoid wasteful mistakes.
  • Efficiency and Transparency. Data collection gives all manufacturing personnel access to the same actionable information. This not only fosters transparency across the board, but it also makes the working environment more efficient. With data readily available, each member of the manufacturing team is on the same page from day one.
  • Consistency. One of the fantastic things about making use of data in manufacturing is that it can make discovering non-conformances in the production process much easier. Identifying inconsistencies helps manufacturers pinpoint specific issues as well as their resolutions for a more efficient operation.
  • Innovation. Data also gives manufacturers a head start when developing new products. Relying on data means manufacturers can more easily assess risks as well as predict the impact of design on product quality and sales.
